BoneGauge provides a means to estimate bone density and quality from a mobile device, offering a practical approach to skeletal assessment in clinical settings.

The application facilitates measurement of cortical thickness of the second metacarpal using images obtained from wrist X-rays. Users can capture a photo of the second metacarpal with a smartphone camera or select an image from their photo library for analysis.

BoneGauge calculates the cortical percentage (2MCP) of the second metacarpal through a semi-automated process. Research indicates that 2MCP correlates with hip bone mineral density and T-scores derived from DXA scans, supporting its potential as a screening tool.

Measurements are uploaded to a centralized database, and when integrated with patient demographics and prior DXA results, can enhance measurement accuracy over time.

This tool enables clinicians to estimate an individual's global T-score based on a simple photograph of the second metacarpal, facilitating initial assessment of bone health in outpatient or inpatient environments. While it is not a substitute for comprehensive DXA testing, BoneGauge may serve as an adjunct for screening purposes, aiding clinical decision-making regarding further evaluation or therapeutic intervention for osteoporosis.
